Water Ingress Detection Systems

Further to our circular O(03)91 dated 6th October, which advised members of the release of Unified Interpretations 179 and 180, we can now confirm that we are receiving advice from manufacturers of Water Ingress Detection Systems that Type Approval is now being given by Classification Societies and Type Approved systems are now available.

We would like to remind members that SOLAS Ch XII/12 requires Water Ingress Detection Systems to be fitted to all bulk carriers from 1st July 2004. Existing bulk carriers must be fitted with the new systems by the first Annual survey after 1st July 2004.

We would like to thank IACS for the early work on the Unified Interpretation of the IMO Performance Standards that allows type approval now to be given.
